They were the books that kicked the hornet’s nest. With 80 million sales worldwide, Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy spawned countless imitators and opened the door for the tidal wave of Scandi and Nordic noir that have hit our shores in the years since 2008.

On 27 August MacLehose Press publishes The Girl in the Spider’s Web, the highly-anticipated novel that sees the return of Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. In the lead up to publication the MacLehose Press and Quercus Books are giving readers across the world the chance to (re)discover the three books that changed crime fiction forever. They’ll be delving deeper into the world that Stieg Larsson created and remind ourselves why Lisbeth is one of crime fiction’s most enduring creations.

What was it about these books that captured our collective imaginations? Larsson’s tightly wound, impossible-to-second-guess plots? The amazing, complex Lisbeth Salander? Or was it the will-they-won’t-they relationship between Salander and Blomkvist? Whatever it was, these were the books that we couldn’t stop reading and talking about.

For the first time The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest have been reissued with stunning new covers and will be available from 4 June. Over 250 libraries and bookshops across the UK are joining #readthegirl and will be creating fantastic displays for a nationwide reading challenge.

Visit them online at lisbethisback.tumblr.com for more materials and insight, including emails between Stieg Larsson and his Swedish publisher, infographics, maps, quizzes and competitions. Tell us how you’re getting on, whether you love them as much as before or if you’re finally discovering what all the fuss is about.
